A Leelanau Legacy

The story of Shady Lane Cellars began in 1987, when a physician from Grand Rapids purchased a century-old fruit farm perched on a hilltop in Suttons Bay, just miles from Traverse City. Drawn by the promise of Northern Michigan’s emerging wine region, the vision was clear: to cultivate exceptional cool-climate fruit and craft wines that reflected the land. With its sandy, well-drained soils, southern exposure, and ideal elevation, the property offered everything needed to bring that vision to life.

Inspired by the pioneering growers of the region, the first 11 acres of vineyard were planted in 1989. Today, Shady Lane Cellars has grown to 150 acres of thoughtfully managed land, including more than 70 acres of vines. Alongside the original Riesling and Pinot Noir plantings, the vineyard now includes Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Blaufränkisch, Gewürztraminer, and more. Each contributing to a diverse portfolio rooted in the character of Leelanau Peninsula.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, our diverse portfolio of varietals and blends offers something to please every palate.

We strive to cultivate an expression of time and place in each of our wines. Seeking to capture the true nature of the cool climate, our wines are expressively vibrant, refreshing and pair well with a range of foods. Winemaker, Kasey Wierzba creates our wine with a philosophy focused on expressing the natural flavors and aromas of the fruit balanced with a precision that is ushered through science and technique. We produce 8,000 cases of wine in a single year, making each bottle special, unique and limited.
